What financial support is available if I can’t afford the funeral?

Depending on the range of benefits you currently get from the DWP you may be eligible for financial assistance from the Social Fund to help pay for the funeral. This assistance called the Funeral Expenses Payment can help pay for some of the following:

  • Burial fees
  • Cremation fees
  • Travel to arrange or go to the funeral
  • Cost of transporting the body within the UK if its being moved more than 50 miles
  • Death certificates or other documents
You can also get an additional payment of up to £700 for any other funeral expenses, such as funeral directors, flowers or coffin. The Funeral Expenses Payment is awarded to the person organising the funeral, however financial assistance may not be available if other members of the deceased persons family can afford to pay.

It's worth pointing out that the total award payment will rarely cover all the costs of the funeral. Find out whether you are eligible on the Government website or call us on 01382 458800.
