What financial support is available if I can’t afford the funeral?

If you are receiving a qualifying benefit from the DWP you may be eligible for financial assistance from Social Security Scotland to help pay for the funeral. This assistance called the Funeral Support Payment can help pay for some of the following:

  • Burial fees
  • Cremation fees
  • Travel to arrange or go to the funeral
  • Cost of transporting the body within the UK if its being moved more than 50 miles
  • Death certificates or other documents
You can also get an additional payment of up to £1000 towards funeral director expenses. The Funeral Support Payment is awarded to the person taking responsibility for the funeral.

It's worth pointing out that the total award payment will rarely cover all the costs of the funeral. Find out whether you are eligible on the Social Security Scotland website or call us on 01382 458800.
